Fire and Smoke Curtain Fabrics

A smoke curtain is a passive fire safety device designed to contain, block, and channel smoke (and sometimes heat) within a building during a fire, preventing its spread to non-affected areas, stairwells, escape routes, or critical building zones. A fire curtain is a robust, active passive fire safety device engineered to act as a temporary physical barrier against the spread of flames, intense heat, and smoke through openings in buildings (e.g., doorways, hallways, atriums) during a fire. It is a critical component of a building’s fire protection system, designed to delay fire and heat spread for a specified certified time (fire rating), protecting evacuation routes, structural elements, and adjacent building zones—while also providing secondary smoke containment.Unlike smoke curtains (which prioritize smoke control), fire curtains are built for direct flame and extreme heat resistance and are tested to strict fire safety standards for flame integrity, heat insulation, and load-bearing capacity in fire conditions.
Thermax offers various fire resistant fabrics engineered specifically for fire and smoke curtains. Ranging from lightweight fabrics for smoke curtains to heavy-duty ones that withstand direct flame exposure for over an hour, these materials are based on fiberglass fabric, steel wire reinforced fiberglass fabric and silica fabric, with post treatment processes including aluminum foil lamination, PU and silicone coating.
